What is riding around Ubud like?

Riding around Ubud means hills, narrow village roads and a lot of rice fields. The roads in the center get busy, especially around Jalan Raya Ubud and Monkey Forest Road in the late afternoon, and some streets are one way. Outside the center the traffic thins out quickly and the rides get very pleasant.

  • Expect steep, winding stretches, for example on the way up to Tegallalang and Kintamani.
  • Roads can be slippery in the rainy season, roughly November to March. Slow down on wet corners and painted lines.
  • Watch for dogs, offerings on the road and temple ceremonies, which can close a road for a while.
  • Bali drives on the left. Give way at junctions and expect sudden U-turns.

Which bike suits Ubud?

A light automatic scooter is enough for most rides in and around Ubud. It is easy to park and handles the village lanes well. If you ride with a passenger, or plan longer climbs and day trips, a bigger automatic scooter is more comfortable on the hills. You can see what is available on our bikes page.

Where can I ride from Ubud?

Ubud is a good base for day trips across central and east Bali. A few popular rides:

  • Tegallalang rice terraces, north of Ubud.
  • Tirta Empul water temple in Tampaksiring.
  • Goa Gajah, the elephant cave, east of central Ubud.
  • Tegenungan Waterfall, close to our shop in Kemenuh.
  • Kintamani and the view of Mount Batur, a longer climb that is worth an early start.

Where do I park in Ubud?

Most cafes, temples and sights have a parking area with an attendant who asks for a small fee. In the center, park where other scooters are parked and keep your helmet with you or locked to the bike. Always lock the steering before you walk away.
